But what it is hard to appreciate is besides being badasses, they were some of the most genuinely kind people you could meet on a mountainside. ⁣ ⁣ I remember the first time I climbed with David he must have been about 14 years old — when he visited the scruffy crags of Rumney and even then seemed to climb the hardest routes with a grace that I have rarely seen. Since that day we always seemed to be able to pick up where we left off, even if a year or more had passed. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Hansjörg had a fire that always seemed to burn bright. I remember this the most from a trip we took to Iceland to climb in Ice Caves (the pictures here). I broke my leg on the first day and for the rest of the trip Hansjörg would help drag me around in a sled, or fix ropes, or solo amazing waves of ice over and over again just so I could get a photo we were both proud of. He also took the biggest whipper on ice I’ve ever witnessed. A good 50’ fall. After which he lowered, tied back in and sent. His thirst for adventure seemed insatiable. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Jess, like Hansjörg and Adam seemed poised to blow our minds and tag summits via lines that most people, myself included, wouldn’t be able to fathom. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If I’m rambling I apologize. This just sucks. ⁣⁣ These guys knew the risks of the lives they led. Hell, Hansjörg climbed the most impressive free-solo climbs people have never talked about. You don’t get more committed than that. Yet, it was because of this unwavering passion and drive that they have and will continue to inspire so many. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If living your life in pursuit of a sole purpose is to seek out greatness — these guys were some of the greatest that ever lived.
