The search for waves along Lake Superior in the winter is real. I learned this first hand when we spent a couple weeks this past February chasing elusive waves on the Great Lakes . We hung with a small crew of dedicated surfers that study the winds daily and then cross their fingers as they hustle to their favorite ‘breaks’. Sometimes driving hours to get there. •

More often than not we would arrive to the point, or the bay, to find it frozen over or packed in by the floating lake ice. Then we waited. If we were lucky the wind kicked on and there would soon be waves. Most of the time though we just stared in awe of the surreal beauty of this place. •
