The first day of fall produced a massive feeding frenzy out on Monterey Bay. Humpback whales alongside long-beaked common dolphins and sea lions gorged themselves on millions of anchovies. The anchovies group together in massive bait balls and the whales dive beneath them and then rush towards the surface trapping the fish where they have no escape. If you look closely at this photo, you can see some anchovies stuck in the whales baleen, and some lucky fish bouncing off the rim of the whales mouth. Those were some lucky fish, but it probably didn't help them too much as whales, dolphins, sea lions, and birds kept bombarding the bait ball till it was just a few stragglers. Also try and notice the baleen growing off the whales upper jaw. Instead of having bony teeth like you and I, they have baleen, which is made up of keratin, same stuff as your hair and fingernails! This is why these whales filter feed and are consuming between 2,000-3,000 pounds of food a day! #humpback #whale #whalewatching #california #nature #wildlife #monterey #montereybay
