I can personally guarantee your heart will never beat as fast as when you're laying down in a shallow river bed with an 800 pound bear maneuvering your way. I was moving upstream with a female and her two cubs, watching as they scanned the creek for salmon. This male bear was wading deep in the water and seemed to be having quite a good amount of success in his attempts to pluck a salmon out of the creek. The mother bear stopped about 200 feet away from the male and started to fish. I positioned myself in the middle of the two and watched for 10 minutes as they each tested their patience. After awhile, the sow (mother bear) made her way up banks of the creek and called her cubs to her side to follow her onshore around the boar (male bear) to get further upstream. I kept my place, as I laid flat across a pebbly rock bed. The male bear would turn his head from side to side, similar to an oscillating fan, as he kept close watch for any sign of movement. He would never look at me, but I could tell when he would turn my way, he was sniffing the air for my scent. It was as though I could read the bears behavior more through the twitching of his nose, than his expressionless gaze, which gave me no sense on what this wild creature was thinking. Eventually, he turned my direction and cut the distance between us to about 30 feet. Some might think this is crazy, but with bears, it's extremely unwise to forfeit your ground, as they will think they can win any challenge at that point. When the time came that I noticed the bear was more interested in fishing, I backed off and retreated towards the high grass. This is my kind of an adrenaline rush! #grizzlybear #bears #wildlife #grizzly #nature #alaska #katmai #brownbear
