Early mornings are always such a tough decision. Do you forfeit your warmth and comfort inside your sleeping bag and tent to venture out into the darkness to find animals in best golden light? The answer was a definitive yes for this Alaskan trip. By camping so close to the main fishing streams, we were able to get out to where the bears were before they took their midday nap. On the first morning, we found this sow brown bear fishing upstream during the low tide, while her two yearling cubs patiently watched from ashore. She would pace back and forth scanning the motionless water for any sort of movement. Without notice, she would belly-flop towards the salmon and sometimes came out of the water having had success! As the sun rose above the meadow bluff and rays of sun poured down on the creek and the family, she gazed up to the East looking directly into the sun. It was a stunning scene watching the water drip from her face as she felt the first warm light of the day greet her face. After awhile, a white wolf appeared on the opposite side of the river, gave us a few glances and retreated to its den behind the brush where this mother bear later followed, taking her cubs to both cooler shelter and a bounty of ripe berries. #grizzlybear #grizzly #nature #bears #wildlife #alaska #katmai #sunrise
