I have no strong emotional attachment to grades. You’ll not see me arguing over numbers etc. Not only doesn’t it interest me I also think as a smaller climber with a more unique set of strengths and weaknesses, grades just make less sense to me. However, grading systems should be linear and there should be an equal increase in difficulty between grade jumps. So with that logic, clearly something should be done about the UK E grade because they are obviously compressed at the top. Luckily for us a team of Brits have created a system to make our stupid grades more accurate. Win! You can check it out at egrader.co.uk 😃 What’s more, with this system I’ve climbed e11. So I’m psyched 😂 Jokes aside… grades are important because they help us orient ourselves towards the right challenge level. Grades are less useful when used to congratulate or berate ourselves on how our string of grades compares to someone else’s string of grades. That said, whatever the grade, the challenge is what it is. And this is decided by the rock in front of us not by the grade we see labelling it. It’s best not to forget that.
