👀 On Imposter syndrome 👀

Imposter syndrome has been a buddy of mine throughout my whole climbing career and now it’s making its way into my coaching career. My mum told me that when she retired after a long and successful career as a head teacher (Principal 🇺🇸) that her first thought was ‘phew I got away with it’.

Because the narrative is that imposter syndrome is bad (and of course it doesn’t feel that great) I’ve failed to recognise the ways in which it could be useful. Imposter syndrome keeps us and our egos in check. It makes us question how good we really are at what we do and whether others are doing it better.

The key thing is to make sure it doesn’t prevent us from doing the things we want to do, living by our values or having the confidence to ask for things we deserve. If we strike this balance maybe imposter syndrome isn’t so bad?
