You hear a lot of climbers and coaches debate whether it’s better to be a specialist or a generalist.
I think most of these conversations miss the salient point: WHY are you choosing to be a specialist or a generalist? What’s the underlying mindset driving that decision?

You could be motivated to be a specialist because you want to master a style or because you just love it, or you could be motivated to be a specialist because you prefer to avoid the things you’re bad at. The former is driven by positive, expansive energy and the latter is driven by fearful avoidant energy.

Are you up for expanding and challenging yourself in ways that challenge your ego, force you to leave your comfort zone and get better as a result? Or are you making decisions through fear and through the desire to stay safe and protect your ego?

One of these mindsets is predictive of positive growth in your climbing and one of them is predictive of self-sabotage and limitation. This is what we should be talking about. The underlying mindset.
