Photos by @carltonward / On assignment for @insidenatgeo making a Last Wild Places film about the Florida Wildlife Corridor. The Suwannee River was a major theme for the project. It flows 240 miles from headwaters in Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp to Florida's Gulf of Mexico coast near Cedar Key. The river's forested banks provide a vital linkage in the Florida Wildlife Corridor, and the fact that the surrounding landscape remains largely undeveloped is a main reason that the estuaries around Cedar Key remain nealry pristine. The abundance of clean water flowing downstream supports clam and oyster aquaculture of national importance. Upstream, long rotation pine plantations drive rural economies while providing land use compatible with the health of the Suwannee watershed. If the working forests are replaced by suburban development, the whole system will degrade.
