Photos by @stuartpalley / A portrait of Dwayne Bullette, a 2 year member of the Valley View inmate fire crew, at the Bear Fire near Berry Creek, CA on Friday September 11th. The crew was “holding” a firing operation, watching for embers blowing over the fireline where Cal Fire crews were protecting a historic fire lookout tower and critical communications infrastructure, such as radio and cell communication towers. A firing operation is designed to deprive the main body of fire fuel when it reaches a certain point. It is a defensive wildland firefighting tactic and works to protect the buildings at risk. Some of the Cal Fire crew members were on their first week of fire, being brought on as a late season hire to augment staffing for hand crews.

To the east was the town of Berry Creek, virtually destroyed by the blaze during the past week’s severe wind event. Multiple fatality victims were found in the area, and pine trees exhibited signs of “flash freezing” where the needles are frozen by heat in the direction of the fire and wind. It looked like a bomb went off. #BearFire #NorthComplex #CAFire #CalFire
