We’re finishing today’s #InternationalDayoftheWorldsIndigenousPeople takeover with this earthy painting by Emily Kame Kngwarreye.⁣

‘The work of the iconic Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye unfolds and examines Indigenous ancestral time and knowledge in a unique and timely way. Her work could be associated with modern abstract art movements, however, it is deeply rooted in her experiences as an Anmatyerre elder at her clan country of Alhalkere, Northern Australia. Kngwarrey's work is a wonderful testimony of how Aboriginal Art is not anchored in a frozen past but is instead part of our lived present and our imagined futures. In this painting she uses dots in ochre, red and white, creating a visual language that is a combination of the cultural experience and aesthetics of animals, vegetation and ancestral oral tradition. This is one of the first pieces where Kame Kngwarreye used acrylic over linen, as previously, she worked largely with batik-based fabrics. Her work is a flow of rhythms and colour sequences that encrypt histories of Aboriginal territories and its vibrant cultures.’ - @pablojoseramirez, Adjunct Curator, First Nations and Indigenous Art, Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational. ⁣

Thank you Pablo for showing us these works in Tate’s collection and sharing your knowledge on #IndigenousPeoplesDay.⁣
