Today is #InternationalDayoftheWorldsIndigenousPeople and we’re continuing our takeover with Tate’s adjunct curator of First Nations and Indigenous Art, Pablo José Ramírez, who is showing us a series of works that engage with Indigenous communities around the world.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
‘The Eye in the Sky is a black and white photograph taken by Indian photographer Gauri Gill of the indigenous artist Rajesh Chaitya Vangad. The work is the result of a longstanding collaboration between the two artists - here Vangad has drawn in black ink over Gill’s photograph. They use local landscapes to discuss issues around urban modernity and the displacement of Indigenous ways of life. The picture was taken by Gill in Maharashtra in western India at a sacred mountain of the Warli community to which Vangad belongs - he is seen here gazing at the mountain. The two-layered image is a wonderful testimony to the negotiation between the two artists, raising important questions around art methods and hierarchies. In Vangad’s drawings, bird-creatures give way to aeroplanes which point towards an urban landscape populated by skyscrapers, houses, cars and groups of people, all surrounded by mythical forms of nature. The Eye in the Sky is a wonderful exploration of forms of Indigenous and non-Indigenous representation in what comes to be an extraordinary case of artistic collaboration.’ - @pablojoseramirez⁣⁣
