Tate Modern's major #SteveMcQueenExhibition reopened at Tate Modern today, spanning two decades of the artist's poignant and pioneering work.

​This still is from Steve McQueen's work entitled 'Ashes', named after a young man that the artist met in 2002 while visiting the island of Grenada. McQueen filmed Ashes as he sat on the front of a boat moving through the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. Some 10 years later, McQueen had returned to Grenada to discover that Ashes had an untimely death and was buried in a paupers grave. McQueen decided to memorialise this vibrant life cut short by creating a film that documents his tombstone being made. The work features footage 11 years apart, shown back-to-back on a single screen, accompanied by a soundtrack featuring two local men recalling Ashes’ last days.⁣
