大英博物館さんのインスタグラム写真 - (大英博物館Instagram)「Today we’re celebrating the work of contemporary artist Vincent Namatjira, who recently became the first Indigenous Australian to win the prestigious Archibald Prize in Australia. This painting was specially acquired by the Museum to feature in our exhibition about Indigenous cultures of Australia in 2015 – one outcome of a collaborative research project between the Museum, @nationalmuseumofaustralia and @ouranu. It depicts Captain James Cook, who appears in many of Namatjira’s works. The artist has stated 'This painting is important for me, because it was the beginning of our shared history, everything after Cook was between all of us'. By presenting Cook's written claim of possession of the east coast of Australia as an extension of his naval uniform, the painting suggests the imposition of British law over Aboriginal country.
