In these two prints, English artist William Hogarth celebrates the benefits of drinking beer compared to the destructive effects of gin 🍻🍸
Hogarth is known for his painting and printmaking, but also satirical prints and cartoons.
In ‘Beer Street’, jolly people enjoy beer from tankards outside a tavern. Industry is thriving, food is plentiful, and the pawn broker’s looks in a bad state.
This image is contrasted in the second print – ‘Gin Lane’ – where emaciated and dishevelled figures lie about, houses are falling down, and the pawn broker’s business is booming.
The prints are a comment on the consumption of gin in Great Britain in the early 1700s. The spirit was cheap, readily available and seen by some as a menace to society – a series of Acts were passed to try and limit its sale. Beer was promoted as a ‘safer’, national drink.
Hogarth died #OnThisDay in 1764.
