Minted in the kingdom of Wessex, this silver penny shows Alfred the Great, who died #OnThisDay in AD 899.

It’s one of over 7,000 coins found in the Cuerdale Hoard – the largest Viking hoard of silver found in the UK – which was discovered in 1840 on the south side of the River Ribble at Cuerdale, Lancashire.

The hoard is thought to have been buried between AD 905–910, and contains coins from all over England, Scandinavia, Europe and the Islamic World.
