Photos by @nicholesobecki / This double wedding celebration was over the top, with drummers and dozens of dancers, hundreds of well wishers, two camels, and pistol-toting celebrants. Taking place in a village outside El Obeid in Sudan’s North Kordofan region, I was so overwhelmed that for a while I forgot to ask a really simple question: Where were the brides? Zainab Hamad’s uncle led me to her, and as the music faded we entered a shaded compound where the bride sat alone with her henna artist as she prepared to be married. The quiet serenity here was such a sharp contrast to the chaos outside. Zainab allowed me to make this portrait of her, the last rays of the sun ebbing, before she emerged into the new life that awaited her. #sudan #history #identity
