Destroyed in 1780 by American forces during the Revolutionary War, it was rebuilt but never recovered. By 1813, an elderly Cherokee couple were the only people living at Chota. In 1979, the site was flooded by the creation of Tellico Lake, but Chota was raised above lake level. Archaeologists unearthed the foundation for the Council house, now marked with a monument situated directly above its former location. The remains of 91 Cherokee people were also unearthed, including Oconostota, a well-known Cherokee warrior.
