For her role in fueling the revolution that ousted President Omar al-Bashir from 30 years of authoritarian rule, Alaa became known as a “Kandake,” or an ancient Nubian queen. She also came to symbolize the integral role women played on the front lines of the pro-democracy protests, where they often outnumbered men. #women #sudan #history #identity
