Photo by @sarah_stacke / A section of the Great Smoky Mountains near the Qualla Boundary, home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians (EBCI). The Cherokee’s ancestral homelands once covered much of present-day North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Today, the EBCI is reclaiming culturally and historically important lands lost during colonization.
Sunsets in the Great Smoky Mountains rarely disappoint. This looks like a moment I experienced in solitude, but there were people picnicking and sitting in camping chairs all around me. As soon as the reds and oranges faded from the sky, they got in their cars and sped away and then, suddenly, I was alone.
