Photos by @nicholesobecki / Meroë was one of the main centers of the powerful Kingdom of Kush (c 900BC to AD 400), which ruled over large parts of the Middle Nile Valley and, at one point, also over Egypt. Their vast influence, distinctive pyramid design, and works of art left a lasting testament to the grandeur of these kings and queens, many of who were laid to rest in these burial grounds. It took me two trips to Sudan and a fair bit of effort to get permission to photograph this ancient site at night, but it was worth it. Moving slowly amongst the tombs, and waiting for the necessary long exposures, was a meditation on time. Can you spot the shooting star? #sudan #history #identity
