Photos by Keith Ladzinski @Keith Ladzinski / What you’re looking at here is a situation that spiraled out of control - This is a large scale #algaeBloom, one that has taken over hundreds of miles of #LakeErie. It’s the result of excess phosphates and nitrates in the water that have been introduced on a running timeline that dates well over 100 years. It’s primarily a derivative of large scale agriculture runoff that enters into the lake through tributary Rivers, irrigations or wind driven sediment. When the weather heats up, typically throughout July to September, these blooms ignite, only subsiding when temps cool down. Once these substances enter the water it can take 100,000’s of years for them to break down. As of now there’s no solution to remove them from the water, but hopefully in the future that will change. In the meantime this problem is wreaking havoc on the lakes ecosystem and the drinking water that millions upon millions of people rely on.
