Photo by Magnus Wennman @magnuswennman | I met young Merullah for the first time in 2011, when I was on assignment in Afghanistan, and then visited him two more times in 2013. He is blind and lived with his family next to the Swedish military base in Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan. Every day, he listened when the heavy vehicles passed. He could feel the ground shaking. He said he would like to get to know the soldiers, but they stayed behind their walls or passed by. “If they came here, I would tell my story for them about the goat and the lion,” he said. In 2014 his neighbors, the foreign militaries, packed up and went home. I often think about how life became for him and what he does today.
