Taken in 1950, this photo from our archives shows Ella Fitzgerald working alongside producer Norman Granz. Granz was one of the most influential people in the 20th century jazz scene. He helped propel musicians like Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson to greatness, created the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series, and changed how audiences around the world listen to jazz. He is our featured #JazzAppreciationMonth artist this year.
A civil rights protest often invokes the vivid images of sit-ins, boycotts, and marches, but the fight for racial equality took many different forms. One of them was jazz. As a producer, artist manager, and promoter, Granz recognized the value of jazz as a tool for social change. Through his Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series, Granz employed tactics aimed at desegregating jazz concerts, providing his musicians with equal rights and opportunities, and making jazz accessible to all people. Use the link in our bio to learn more about Granz and the connections between jazz and social justice. [?: Archives Center]
