When Charlotte Cushman stepped out on stage in this red costume to play Cardinal Wolsey in Shakespeare’s “Henry VIII” in 1857, people took note. ?
While female actresses had a long history playing tragic male characters such as Romeo and Hamlet, lots of men went to see women in these male roles because they were costumed in tights that revealed legs normally concealed under dresses. But as you can see, the Wolsey costume did not reveal Cushman’s legs, but was rather looser fitting than some of the costumes Cushman wore to wear female characters. One of the most celebrated actresses of her time, Cushman took on the part of Wolsey to show that she could play dramatic men's roles on her acting merits, without resorting to looking racy. She succeeded.
Cushman broke barriers off stage as well as on. To learn more, check out the link in our bio. http://s.si.edu/Cardinal
