Work can be a stressful place. How do you blow off steam? In the 1930s, laborers who spent most of their days underground building New York City's Midtown Tunnel liked to spend their breaks drinking coffee and playing cards. Photographer Carl Mydans captured this image during a game of "21." In 1939, Mydans traveled 100 feet underground to document the building of the Midtown Tunnel, which runs under the East River all the way from 42nd Street in Manhattan to Queens. His photos captured the tunnel’s builders—nicknamed "sandhogs"—both at work and at play. Swipe right to see more his work.
Almost eight decades have passed since Mydans's prize-winning study of the sandhogs was published in "LIFE" magazine on April 3, 1939.
