Since 1996, underwater investigation at the mouth of the Nile in Egypt has uncovered spectacular objects, including monumental statues, religious offerings and ancient ships. The finds shed new light on the interaction between ancient Egypt and the Greek world at a crucial period in their history, from the arrival of Greeks in Egypt around 650 BC to the reign of the Greek-Macedonian Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt (51–30 BC).
This skilfully executed head shows a Greek (Ptolemaic) king entirely depicted in accordance with ancient Egyptian traditions: his head is adorned by the rearing cobra protruding from the traditional headcloth of Egyptian pharaohs. This kind of royal portrait illustrates how the Greek Ptolemaic rulers presented themselves to their Egyptian subjects as legitimate successors to the native pharaohs.
