By the early 17th century, watchmaking in France had reached a high level of sophistication. The quality of engraved decoration on French cases was perhaps better than anywhere else in Europe. This watch was made around 1625–1635 by the celebrated watchmaker Jean Vallier who worked in Lyon, one of the most important centres of the craft at this time.
With its unusual case design, finely engraved decoration and striking calendar and alarm, this watch represents the best that money could buy. The case band has intricate designs of foliage incorporating fabulous birds and is pierced to allow the sound of the bell to escape. Apollo and the Nine Muses adorn the case back, each named and depicted in character – in the middle are Euterpe, Erato and Terpsichore with the other muses surrounding them. The dial is also of the highest quality – a small rectangular opening shows the date at the top of the dial and a subsidiary dial indicates the age and phase of the moon. Two sectors in the upper right-hand area show the seasons and the months, with the number of days in each.
This is just one highlight from the Museum’s wonderful collection of clocks and watches. You can see it on display in Rooms 38–39.
