Our #SicilyExhibition opens on Thursday! Here’s a sneak peek at how our team of curators and specialists prepared objects for installation.
This terracotta bust probably depicts Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. It was discovered with over 12,000 terracotta figures and busts representing fertility goddesses and their worshippers. It was found in a sanctuary at Selinous (ancient Selinunte) in Sicily, where Demeter was worshipped in the local form of Malophoros (apple-bearer). Located on the edge of the city, close to the necropolis (cemetery), the cult was linked with both fertility and the underworld. Its worshippers were women and details of the rituals were mostly kept secret. Ancient sources and the discovery of actual objects from the sanctuary suggest that ceremonies were uninhibited, took place far away from the main settlement and included the sacrifice of piglets.
