She then passes by a rock garden inspired by Ryōan-ji (the Temple of the Dragon at Peace) in Kyoto, Japan, before arriving at the central vignette, a duplicate of her bedroom. Like the garden at Ryōan-ji, Kuriki-Olivo’s rock garden is both an abstract composition of natural elements and a space for meditation and reflection—a prime example of the Japanese concept of wabi sabi, the appreciation for the ephemeral or fleeting. For the artist—whose lineage is both Japanese and Taíno—the simplicity and ephemerality of the rock garden is also deeply intertwined with her personal history.
