I also imagine that some people might have been shocked by the post and thought I was oversharing or made them feel uncomfortable. The reality is that if I’d talked about my physical health no one would have thought it was over sharing or probably reacted much to it at all. There is still a lot of stigma around mental health and that’s because of the nature of mental health problems. They are more personal, emotional, complex and difficult to talk about. A lot of the time I don’t want to talk about my mental health and I certainly don’t want to do that with people I don’t feel safe with. But at the same time stigma and weirdness around it doesn’t help. It really adds to the idea that there is something wrong with you personally, some weakness… somehow you feel more responsible which feels especially nasty. It certainly doesn’t feel ‘normal’ which is fairly outrageous given mental health affects 1 in 4 of us each year in the UK 🤯 Anyway this isn’t a post with answers just a reflection that it might be useful for us to compare the differences in our reactions to people sharing about mental versus physical health and whether we think that’s a useful disparity. In my opinion I think we should at least aim to normalise mental health as part of the discussion when we talk about well-being. Just in the same way I can say I have Covid while sparing you all the icky details I can mention my mental health isn’t that great while sparing you all the icky details 🤷‍♀️ What do you think?
