This squeegee handle saved the lives of six elevator passengers descending the North Tower of the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001, when a hijacked commercial airliner crashed into the building.
Jan Demczur was a window washer who happened to have a bucket full of tools with him. When the smoke-filled elevator made an emergency stop and the doors opened in between floors, the passengers were boxed in by thick drywall. After a failed attempt cutting through the wall with a pocketknife, one of the passengers grabbed Demczur’s Squeegee tool, cutting through what would end up being three drywall layers and a tile wall.
All six people survived, exiting the building just before it fell.
This squeegee handle is in the collection of our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館.
