A little to the left! “Guiding Red” was an enormous painting by Helen Frankenthaler—30 x 16 feet. In this 1977 photo, a crew installs it in the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York City. One of the largest Frankenthaler painted and an example of her soak-stain technique using thinned paint, the artwork no longer exists.

Our @archivesamerart tells the story of visual art in the United States through primary sources, from behind-the-scenes photos like this one to scrapbooks, letters, and mementos. In “Staff Picks: Our Favorite Things from the Collection,” explore some of the staff’s favorite among the millions of documents, terabytes of data, and nearly 3,000 oral history interviews in their collection.
