Album artwork opens up a world of sound. 🎶
Since its beginning 75 years ago, Folkways Records has been known for its striking album covers, iconography, and design.

@smithsonianfolkways, our non-profit record label, preserves these covers and the recordings they represent, making them available to the public and keeping that spirit alive in new releases.

In celebration of Folkways’ 75th anniversary, enjoy these rockin’ album covers, from folk singer Pete Seeger’s anthem for peace, “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” to the husky croaks of North American Frogs.

Folkways founder Moses Asch sought a distinctive look for the wide variety of audio that made Folkways unique among record labels. Through bold use of typography and two-color printing on matte paper, album covers by artists Ronald Clyne, Irwin Rosenhouse, and more capture the eye in record store bins to this day. Which of these is your favorite?

You can sample these sounds and images through the Smithsonian Folkways website.
