This late summer to early fall bloomer is a Rudbeckia fulgida v. fulgida, better known as black-eyed Susan. Black-eyed Susans are low maintenance pollinators which thrive in full sun and, while they do prefer consistent moisture, are strong enough to handle a bit of drought. If you wander our @smithsoniangardens this weekend, you’ll see pops of bright yellow everywhere despite the record heat.

There are multiple variations of black-eyed Susan. The Rudbeckia hirta has been the official flower of Maryland since 1918.
