Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered #OnThisDay in 1922.

Archaeologist Howard Carter and his team found the 3,000-year-old tomb in the Valley of the Kings – so called because of the high concentration of royal tombs cut out of the rock.

Tutankhamun’s burial is the only one only one dating from Egypt’s New Kingdom (c.1550–1069 BC) to have been found largely undisturbed, and the contents provided an unparalleled insight into the royal funerary practices, art and craftsmanship of the period.

These photos are from Carter’s excavation records, and show the tomb’s antechamber when it was discovered.
