今日の和菓子 : 木守

昔から、たわわに実った柿の実は、全部は取らずに一つだけ残し、それを『木守り』と呼んだそう。

それは収穫に感謝して神様にお供えするものであり、来年の豊作を願う願掛けであり、冬に向かい食料が少なくなる鳥たちへの心遣いだったりもするそうです。

たくさん実をつけてくれた庭の柿。
こっそり餡に忍ばせた、見た目にも味にも秋を満喫できる練り切りのお菓子です。

Today's Wagashi : Tree Protector

“Kimamori” means tree protector in Japanese. The word refers to the custom of leaving a single persimmon fruit on the top tree during winter as its guardian. It also represents appropriation for the harvest and wishing for a rich harvest the following year. You can also leave it as a share for the birds and insects. I love the Japanese aesthetic of this tradition and the sense of reciprocity in valuing the natural world.
This confectionery visualizes the persimmon fruit as a gift from nature in autumn.
