Hundreds of people sat with their families in makeshift tents, or took shelter in this school, after they lost their home to mass flooding in Sudan’s capital of Khartoum. Over 800,000 have been affected and more than 120 people have died in the worst floods in decades. The women here meeting with displaced families are not from an NGO, but rather a neighborhood resistance committee who call themselves the “Kandakes of the Southern Belt.” During the revolution, grassroots ‘resistance committees’ like the “Kandakes” organized protests to remove former President Omar al-Bashir, but today have become more established and expanded their reach, working to support not only flood victims, but those impacted by the economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and beyond. “Women have always been strong throughout our history, like the ancient queens,” Zainab Hassan, from the “Kandakes” told me. “And now we’re leading again.” #sudan #history #identity
