I spent hours on Tatham Gap, a remote dirt passage through the mountains. The history of this place is heavy and in the air. The challenge of making a photograph that speaks to something that happened long ago is real. Tatham Gap runs along the Old Army Road that was built by N.C. troops in early 1838 in preparation for the forced removal of Cherokee citizens, thus making the road a section of the Trail of Tears. The road passes over Snowbird Mountain, elevation 3800 ft. In crossing Snowbird along the Old Army Road, the Cherokee prisoners climbed the highest point along the entire 900-mile Trail of Tears. An estimated 17,000 Cherokee were forced off their homelands and into Oklahoma in 1838. The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians are descendants of those that hid in the hills, returned from the West, or were allowed to stay through political relationships. #landback #ebcihomelands #trailoftears」10月17日 7時11分 - natgeointhefield
