Happy Cinco De Mayo! I couldn’t think of a better image to share today than this photo of a smiling gray whale calf I took down in Baja California a few months ago. This was a monumental shot for me as I had imagined an image of a gray whale showing off its baleen for quite some time. Like the fin whale from a few days ago, gray whales are a difficult whale to photograph. They feed on the sea floor in icy and isolated Arctic waters where almost no one can see them, they tend to be shy on their epic migrations along the coast, and they rarely perform surface acrobatics like their cousins the humpbacks. All this said, having this gray whale calf give me a nice smile in the shallow lagoon where it was born, was more than I could have ever asked for.
