I have spotted them many times in the high Arctic, from a floatplane in Alaska, up in Iceland, down in Baja, and across the California coast. However, since they rarely do anything but swim fast and disappear faster, my camera had nothing to show for all those sightings. Last autumn in Monterey Bay, we had a large surge of fin and blue whales, with the fins actually outnumbering the blues. This was quite surprising as we generally see many more blue whales, but it finally provided the opportunity to photograph the second largest animal on the planet (blue whale being the largest). What really distinguishes the fin whale from all other mammals, is that they are the only asymmetrical colored mammal on the planet, as their lower right jaw is white and the left is grey. No one quite understands the reasoning for this, but it is one easy way to identify them, if of course you can catch a decent glimpse of the “greyhound of the sea”.」5月2日 2時08分
