In 2011 and 2016, I went here with @nature_africa to photograph the Tuungane Project, which aims to create healthier families, fisheries, and forests. Here, only 1 in 10 girls finish secondary school, due to pregnancies, the time spent getting to school, or other challenges. But staying in school means these girls typically marry and start having children at a later age, and education provides women more opportunities to become employed, earn an income, and reduce their overall reliance on natural resources. In early 2019, @nature_africa donors built a life-changing, 80-bed girls’ dormitory next to Lagosa Secondary School. Girls who otherwise had no time to study due to long walks to school or faced other hardships at home now have a safe place to live and learn.
