Today we remember novelist Toni Morrison. Since her first novel "The Bluest Eye," published in 1970, she wrote about the experiences of African Americans. Morrison drew on her life and historical accounts to craft stories that spoke broadly on issues of exclusion and belonging.
In 1993, she won the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first black woman to become a Nobel laureate.
Helen Marcus created this 1978 portrait to help publicize Morrison's novel "Song of Solomon." It's in the collection of our @smithsoniannpg.
