On July 23, 1904, according to some accounts, Charles E. Menches invented the ice cream cone.
Thank goodness.
Several people do claim that they were the first to create an edible cone—including Ernest Hamwi, Abe Doumar, Albert and Nick Kabbaz, Arnold Fornachou and David Avayou—all of whom made or sold confections at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Whoever it was, we're grateful.
Wayne Thiebaud's "Girl with Ice Cream Cone" (1963) is in our @hirshhorn's collection.
