Neil Armstrong was born today in 1930. Fifty years after he took the first steps on the Moon, @smithsonian3d released 3D scans of his spacesuit, helmet and gloves in our @airandspacemuseum's collection.
The suit was digitized using a variety of methods: laser arm scanning was the primary method, picking up extreme detail down to the weave of the fabric on the suit, while CT scanning captured components on the inside.
The 3D models, fully annotated by the suit’s curator and conservator, are now available at 3d.si.edu/armstrong.
You can Google "Neil Armstrong" on your phone to explore the suit in 3D and have it hang out with you in AR. #Apollo50

Glad the Smithsonian gave this the care it deserves. Our great hero, along with Armstrong and Collins, and all the others.

It was so awesome to see this suit and watch the IMAX movie on Apollo 11.
