Have a favorite Fourth of July outfit? We're partial to this red, white, and blue Uncle Sam costume from the 1950s. 🎆
Wisconsinite Wilburt E. Leppien first donned this costume in 1956. A resident of Madison, Leppien took part in numerous ceremonies and parades across the country—including five presidential inaugurations. During his appearances, Leppien would hand photo cards to the people he met—swipe to see what they looked like. 📷
By the mid-1800s, Uncle Sam had become the most recognizable personification of the U.S. government. Rather than an authority figure, he was most often was portrayed with affection and used as an emblem of national kinship intended to instill patriotism. 🇺🇸 Planning a visit? Leppien’s Uncle Sam costume is on display in our exhibition, “American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith.” #FourthOfJuly #4thOfJuly #July4th #IndependenceDay #AmericanHistory #UncleSam #WisconsinHistory #Madison #HolidayHistory #AmericanDemocracy #NationWeBuildTogether #PoliticalHistory #CostumeHistory #VintageClothing
