But to its ancient Persian builders of the 5th century B.C.E., so central was it to their idea of who they were, it was simply Pārsa, “city of Persians.” Pārsa awed dignitaries who came from the far ends of the largest empire of the age to pay tribute. The art of Persepolis was brilliant propaganda: It played to aspirations as well as fears.
