Some say it was built as much for keeping the Chinese in and the soldiers busy so they had no time to think about revolt. Others say it was a calamitous and ill-conceived folly, draining China’s coffers while ultimately failing to keep marauding nomads out and leading to xenophobia and isolation. This history lesson might be valuable to the United States, as debate continues on the proposed wall along the Mexican border.
