This pigeon served in TWO World Wars. Born in Germany, he carried messages for the German army during World War I until he was captured by the Americans and nicknamed "Kaiser." He was paraded around the U.S. as part of Signal Corps recruiting efforts and enjoyed fairly comfy conditions.

Once the war was over, Kaiser and his mate produced offspring that became champion racers. Then World War II loomed. Living in his own loft with his latest mate Lady Belle, Kaiser sired over 75 squeakers (baby pigeons) for the U.S. Army. His kids found themselves going overseas in World War II.

Kaiser outlived all the other captured pigeons who served in World War I. When he turned 31, nursery school kids at New Jersey's Fort Monmouth threw him a party and made him the guest of honor. The American Legion of Los Angeles gave him a gold band bearing their crest.

After his 1949 death, he came to the @スミソニアン博物館. He's not usually on display. But if you'd like to see him, stop by on Sunday, November 11. He'll be on special displaying during our free Remembering World War I program in honor of the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.
