If this doll doesn’t already creep you out, what if we told you it talks?
It recites “Jack and Jill” and 11 other nursery rhymes in a young woman’s voice. Do you have nightmares yet? ?
Who to blame for this fright? Thomas Edison. When Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, he imagined a variety of uses for the machine—including animating toys. In 1887, Edison licensed W. W. Jacques and Lowell C. Briggs to make and sell talking dolls as the Edison Toy Phonograph Company. A small phonograph in the doll’s torso plays when a crank on the doll’s back is turned. Whether this doll was ever finished with a wig and clothing is unknown. The dolls were briefly manufactured in 1890, but did not prove popular. Wonder why?? Today you can see this doll in our “American Enterprise” exhibition, and learn more about Thomas Edison’s phonograph in our newly opened “America’s Listening” display.
